THE WEST COAST RAIL CORRIDOR
The Western Rail Corridor runs from Ennis to Athenry to Claremorris to Sligo. There is a lot of agitation to have it re-opened as the track is in situ. From Ennis to Athenry has had a train recently but from Athenry to Claremorris the line could be reopened without major work whereas from Claremorris north it would take major work.
We hope to show some photos of the entire but for starters here are some of the track on the Athenry to Collooney section. It is quite clear that it would take very little to re-open the line as the sleepers are in excellent condition. A visit from a weed spraying unit might work miracles.
The Government has appointed a forum to discuss the situation which should take them past the next election. These photos just shows that all these forums etc. are bullshit. If they wanted the line open it could be done in six months. I note that speaking from inside IR there is not even discussion of re-opening and they have no intention of doing it unless dragged screaming by the throat to do it.
